Nature Notes – April 2022

  • The first ducklings of 2022 arrived on 9th April – all 13 of them!
  • The large golden koi carp (we call him Horace) spent the winter largely in the depths of the pond – carp are adapted to low oxygen levels – but we were pleased to see has resurfaced and is active again.  He is thought to be a released goldfish from over a decade ago.  Please do not release any more – they can breed and outcompete native species if they escape into waterways.
  • There was a good showing of both toads and frogs spawning last month.  Their spawn is maturing and we await the first tadpoles.
  • The wild strawberries are evident on both sides of the track near the wooden gate – look out for smaller versions of the familiar cultivated variety.
